Monday Made-It: Teacher Toolbox

I've seen these Teacher Toolboxes floating around all over Pinterest and I've wanted to make one for awhile.  For the upcoming school year I decided that a desk takes up too much space in my classroom and I am not going to have one!  Instead, I'm going to have my computer on the counter-top at the back of the room and I plan to work from my kidney-bean shaped table with small groups.  This solves two problems - (1) a lack of space and (2) flat surfaces for me to make "piles" on - you know, those really important piles that you'll go through later.  Only to find out when you finally "go through" them you could have thrown 85% of the stuff away a month ago if you would have just looked at it, instead of putting it in a special "pile!"

So, I spent some time over the weekend and created these fun Teacher Toolbox Labels that you can purchase and print from my TpT store!  I made them ocean themed to start because, well, I love the ocean!  I plan to make other themes and add them to my TpT store over the upcoming weeks!  If there's a particular theme you're interested in seeing, please leave me a comment below!  You never know - I might just send you a link for a free download just for the idea!  

Here's a quick "How-To" on the Teacher Toolbox:

1. Purchase a "Stack-On" 22 compartment organizer.  I found mine at Mills Fleet Farm for $16.97 today.  I have heard you can also find them at Menards, Home Depot and Lowe's.  

2. Using spray paint or duck tape (I chose duck tape because my kids wanted to help!) decorate your container.  Or, skip this step because a gray box is just fine, too!

3. Purchase my Teacher's Toolbox Labels in my TpT Store.  Download, print, cut, and laminate (if you choose).

4. Using a little double-sided, clear adhesive, tape the tags to the insides of the drawers.  Ta-Da!  You are finished!  Now you just need to fill the drawers with all of your goodies!

I can't wait to take mine to school tomorrow and fill it up!  It should help to clear off some of the clutter on my table...since I wasn't sure where all of my "desk" stuff was going to go, seeing as how I got rid of the desk!

How to Make Your Very Own ABC Tubs

Have you ever looked at the ABC tubs from Lakeshore Learning and wondered if you could make them yourself for less than the asking price of $149?  I was wondering the same thing over the past few weeks and decided to take the plunge!!  Now, I want to share my success with you!

First, I went to the Dollar Tree and found these fabulous Surefresh, Reusable, Round containers with lids!  They were sold in sets of 4.  So, I purchased 7 sets, giving me 28 containers (2 extras, but I'll find something clever to do with those).  It only cost me $7.51 after tax!!!  I'm not going to lie, I was pretty excited at this point!

Next I printed out the letters (one uppercase and one lowercase for every letter) on card stock.  I cut them out and used shipping tape to secure them to each of the containers.  

It took awhile, but I've slowly filled each container with some goodies that start with the letter.  I asked my kids to help me when they were cleaning their rooms and came across little things they didn't want anymore!  I also went to Michaels Craft Store and bought a few packages of buttons to add to the "harder" letters.  I spent another $10 on buttons.  You can also look in the "dollhouse" section of Michaels for miniature items, listed below!

I plan to ask my students to bring in things to help fill the containers once school starts up again in the fall!

Here are some ideas of ways you can use these fabulous little containers now that you've got them ready to go:

* Set up a learning center and have students sort the items from 4-5 containers back into the correct containers.  Ask them to explain why they sorted the items the way they did.  You might be surprised.  I've had "zebra" sorted into "S."  Why, you might ask?  For "stripes," of course!!

* You can use these for ELL students.  Maybe they have never seen a cotton ball or q-tip.  This would be a good, tactile experience for them.  

* I used these containers when we were working on writing "describing statements" in first grade.  Students had to pick an item from one container and look at it, feel it, and smell it.  This helped them to verbally share their describing statements before writing them out.

* Use them when you are introducing a letter of the week in Kindergarten.  Students can practice their beginning sounds that each letter can make by saying the name of the various goodies you have put in the containers.
